SPENCER SINGLETON

Spencer Singleton, social studies teacher at CMS, has been sharing the joy of chess with young people of all ages for over 17 years. Seven of those years were devoted to Cochrane Middle School, where his scholastic chess participants brought home multiple state championships and national awards. Spencer is in his 11th year of teaching at West Charlotte (WC) Senior High School, where he also advises the chess club/team. During his tenure at WC, the chess teams won two consecutive state championships, followed by a tie for 1st place honors in the K12, U1300 Section. The school’s trophy cases overflow with state and national chess metal. In the “2009 High School Nationals” WC finished in 5th place in the K12, U900 Section. Besides teaching and advising the chess club, Spencer plays the trumpet with a local orchestra and writes and records music.
